There are roughly 800,000 people with a developmental disability in Canada alone with only 17.9% of this population being employed. Most individuals with a developmental disability are eager to find meaningful employment and life skills but lack the resources to do so.
Mighty Hawks is a student-run social enterprise at Wilfrid Laurier University. We are committed to working with individuals with developmental disabilities in the Kitchener-Waterloo community and fighting the stigma surrounding hiring individuals with disabilities. Our mission is to help our participants foster greater independence in the community, build meaningful relationships and feel confident in reaching their personal and professional goals. This is achieved through one-on-one sessions run by our passionate student volunteers and structured curriculums. In addition to the one-on-one sessions, we run bi-weekly interactive group sessions in order to foster an energetic and positive learning environment. At Mighty Hawks, we strive to make a real impact on the lives of each individual and believe that a disability does not define the scope of one’s abilities. |

The RJ Project will provide schools and educators the opportunity for their students to engage in an immersive video game that fosters social emotional learning, and conflict resolution that will promote compassion and empathy inside and outside their school community.
Our solution is to implement an interactive video game that will use restorative practices, methods, and principles to engage students in making positive life choices. It will employ social emotional learning, conflict resolution and positive community actions as the foundation for learning goals. |

Food Fight will be a mobile application that allows food businesses, specifically consumer facing; restaurants, fast food, cafes, etc., to sell their surplus food at a discount. Through personal experience and primary research, we discovered that these food businesses have strict policies in place requiring them to dispose of any unsold food at the end of the day or end of a service cycle. As a result, these businesses end up throwing away an abundance of safe to eat food, simply due to company policies.
This widespread issue can be greatly reduced through our app, which would operate similarly to any other food ordering app, with an added twist. Our app allows food businesses to advertise a deal at the end of a goods’ life, with the mindset that the reduced price would attract additional sales, thus decreasing the waste. As we know, Tim Hortons disposes of any unsold donuts at the end of the day, due to their “fresh” expectations. With the Food Fight app, they can advertise half price donuts between the hours of 9PM to 11PM and users of the app can claim the deal, pay through the app, and then go to the restaurant to claim. |

Breaking is an enterprise focused on breaking the cycle that exists between addiction and foster care. Our research focused on understanding the connection that exists between addiction, foster care youth, and the criminal justice system. Majority of the people leaving rehab, prison or foster care are provided with very little support (if at all) regarding mental health, employment, housing etc. Breaking the cycle is working to developing a curriculum that will assist these individuals in developing a sustainable lifestyle that will enable them to break the cycle.

Coffee Candy is a capsule containing flavoured coffee syrup. We allow businesses to finally have an option that's better for the environment, cheaper than the current options, while still maintaining a luxurious taste profile. Our product acts as an improved substitute for the standard syrup bottles that coffee shops are currently using. Instead of plastic single-use bottles, Coffee Candy's packaging is entirely biodegradable.

More Homes is a social enterprise that is working on bridging the gap between shelters and supportive housing systems. By providing resources and filling the gaps within the current existing system in Canada, they hope to ensure the homeless community are supported in their journey to become self-sustaining.
Due to the current global pandemic, many people including the homeless (women and youths), victims of domestic abuse are facing various restrictions limiting their access to basic resources. Such resources will ensure the people staying in our shelter are facilitated with their basic needs. The current “Point In Time” system being used to track the number of people in need of shelters is biased as it only tracks them in certain provinces and regions. People who are not a part of the regions within the system are not taken into account for and thus are left unsheltered. This will be done by placing our shelters in regions where the system doesn’t cover. |
