Violence in schools continues to escalate, and despite policy interventions schools continue to use punitive measures that rely on exclusionary discipline policies like suspensions and expulsions. These measures focus on the effects of behaviour vs. the root causes, and lead to negative outcomes for the students involved.
The RJ Project is providing an alternative intervention strategy that focuses on prevention. We are essentially transforming youth conflict resolution through play. Our EdTech solution uses a video game format to gamify the learning of social-emotional skills needed by youth to navigate conflict in positive ways, giving them a sense of agency to create better outcomes. The game uses the principles of restorative justice to help the students build a toolkit for dealing with conflict before problems escalate, in a way that helps build positive relationships and community. By gamifying the learning we’re offering an opportunity for playful exploration that acts as a rehearsal for real life and in the process are reimagining how we can make education safer and more inclusive for all students. |
